February High Stakes: All Hail Great Gus

April 26, 2011

Gus Hansen continues to amaze with another spectacular month on Full Tilt Poker.

February saw plenty of action with new winners and losers but the Great Dane maintained his spot as top dog.
At the end of February, Hansen was up $2.5 million, which makes the hundreds of thousands he lost in 2010 much easier to forget.

Fellow Full Tilt pro Phil Ivey had a nice bounce-back month while Patrik Antonius and Tom “durrrr” Dwan floundered.

This month all the biggest wins and losses were recorded on Full Tilt Poker, outside of one honorable mention.

Top 5 Winners

1. Gus Hansen: $2.3 million
Although Gus Hansen’s numbers for January were not as high as originally thought because he lost a great deal in the draw games, he did record an astounding $2.3 million profit in February.

Rui Cao, Jared “harrington25” Bleznick and Phil “OMGClayAIken” Galfond were just a few of the players the Great Dane victimized this past month.

At the completion of February, Hansen was up $2.5 million for the year and is still the biggest winner in online poker in 2011.

2. Matt Hawrilenko: $1.7 million
Math whiz and Full Tilt pro Matt Hawrilenko hadn’t been particularly active online in 2011 but he made up for it with an outstanding February.

Hawrilenko was very successful in the deuce-to-seven triple draw games and repeatedly stacked veteran cash-game player David Oppenheim.

Phil Ivey

3. Phil Ivey: $949k
Phil Ivey returned to the online poker scene with vengeance in February.

Off to a slow start in 2011, Ivey was actually the second biggest loser in January dropping $612k.
It took Ivey just 6,271 hands in February to erase his deficit and give himself a tidy profit.

Ivey has never recorded a losing year online and it looks like he means to keep it that way.

4. Dan “jungleman12” Cates: $929k
Dan “jungleman12” Cates is another one of the elite online players that got off to a slow start in 2011.

He made up for lost time in February by pulling in $929k from players like rumprammer and harrington25.

5. Andreas “skjervoy” Torbersen: $782k
Unlike some of the other players on this list, Andreas “skjervoy” Torbergsen has been a model of consistency this year and had nearly $1 million in profit at the end of February.

Although Torbergsen rarely records the huge victories that some of his colleagues do, he tends to always rake in a couple hundred thousand when he plays.

If he can hold on to his momentum, he’s looking at a potentially huge year.

Honorable mention: Viktor “Isildur1” Blom $692k
Scandinavian phenom Viktor “Isildur1” Blom had his best month since joining PokerStars and looked legitimately lethal in a few matches against Scott “URnotINdanger2” Palmer.
