January High Stakes: High on Hansen
March 23, 2011
A familiar Danish poker pro led the way in the first month of 2011.
Gus Hansen
Gus Hansen, who had one of his worst years of online poker in 2010, was consistently one of the best players last month.
The rest of the winners are relatively unsurprising with Di Dang, Patrik Antonius and Scott Palmer in the mix.
Dang is technically the biggest winner if you include his PokerStars “ilvdnfl” account.
Meanwhile we’re betting the second biggest loser in January will come as a huge surprise to most railbirds. For more information on high stakes poker be sure to check our online poker stats section.
All of the following accounts are on Full Tilt Poker unless otherwise noted:
Top 5 Winners
1. Gus Hansen: $908,000
Gus Hansen is off to a killer start in 2011 but the Great Dane should be cautious heading into the rest of the year.
Last year he got off to a great start spinning his way up to nearly $2 million in profit before going on a catastrophic downswing that saw him bottom out at -$3.55 million in late summer.
He later recovered to finish the year only down $1 million but he probably wouldn’t mind avoiding a $5 million downswing this year.
2. Urindanger: $898,000
Di Dang, who has never recorded a losing year online, is already up nearly $1 million in 2011.
Known for playing a great deal against Gus Hansen, Dang instead won a huge amount from cadillac1944 this month.
Dang’s numbers are far more impressive once you take the fifth biggest winner on our list into consideration.
3. URnotINdanger2: $862,000
Scott “URnotINdanger2” Palmer likes to fly under the radar but that doesn’t keep him from stacking hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Maryland-native was red-hot in January, recording huge wins against Kpederson, Patrik Antonius and Tom “durrrr” Dwan.
Patrik Antonius
4. Patrik Antonius: $835,000
Patrik Antonius had a slow year in 2010. He didn’t lose millions of dollars but he didn’t win them either.
It’s something that he seems to want to rectify in 2011 as he’s already up to $835,000 in profit.
If he can just continue that pace for 11 more months he’ll be closing in on $12 million by the end of the year.
5. Ilvdnfl (PokerStars): $797,000
ilvdnf is widely-considered to be Di Dang’s PokerStars account, which means the young high stakes pro is easily the biggest winner in 2011 with close to $1.7 million in profit when you combine both of his accounts
If Dang were to stop playing poker for the rest of the year there’s a good chance he would still be one of the top 10 biggest winners by the end of 2011.
