2009 WSOP Final Table Set: Ivey Part of November Nine
July 17, 2009
Twenty seven players arrived in Day 8 of the 2009 World Series of Poker, all vying for the much-coveted final table slot. In the end, only one bracelet winner remained in the running as Phil Ivey was left with a meager 9,765,000 chip stack. Darvin Moon, on the other hand, will go into the final table with a massive chip stack holding 58,930,000 in chips.
Antonio Esfandiari’s ran deep in the Main Event but came up short when he was busted by Steven Begleiter in 24th place. The flashy pro raised pre-flop with 5h-5d and was called by Begleiter. The flop fell 4c-2d-10d and Esfandiari bet out. Begleiter raised Esfandiari who moved All-In. Begleiter called with top pair, holding Kc-10c. The 6h on the turn kept Esfandiari’s dreams alive but the As gave the hand to Begleiter. Esfandiari won $352,832 for his troubles.
Former chip leader Warren Zackey finally ran out of steam and succumbed in 22nd place after losing a race with Ian Tavelli. Tavelli raised with Qs-Js and Zackey moved All-In with 2s-2h. Unfortunately for Zackey, Tavelli called and proceeded to flop a Qh. Zackey’s ducks didn’t improve and he ended up with $352,832.
Wondering how Darvin Moon accumulated such a great amount of chips? Blame it on Billy Kopp. Kopp raised pre-flop and was called by Moon. The flop fell Kd-9d-2d. Moon checked the flop and Kopp bet. Moon check-raised and Kop moved All-In with around 20 million in chips. Kopp was drawing dead with his flopped flush with 5d-3d versus Moon’s flopped flush with Qd-Jd. Kopp was eliminated in 12th place for $896,730.
Phil Ivey busted Jamie Robins after the latter made a stand with Kc-Qs. Ivey called with As-10h. Unfortunately for Robbins, with a 8s-3s-3d-3h-5c flop, Ivey’s Ace was enough. That didn’t stop Robbins for picking up $896,730 for 11th place.
Who was the victim of the final table bubble? That honor belongs to Jordan Smith courtesy of David Moon. After Smith checked the 8c-4d-2d flop, Moon bet out an impressive amount. Smith moved all-in showing off Ah-Ad. Unfortunately for him, Moon flopped a set with 8h-8d. The 5h and 10h on the river proceeded to crack Smith’s Pocket Rockets and the final nine was set. The bubble boy won $896,730.
Aside from Moon and Ivey, James Akenhead, Kevin Schaffel, Steven Begleiter, Erich Buchman, Joe Cada, Antoine Saout and Jeff Shulman are the other contenders for the Main Event bracelet. Will Moon hold on to his seemingly insurmountable lead? Or will 7-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey, arguably the most dangerous man on the final table, make a stunning comeback? Poker fans have no other choice but to wait until November to find out how each final table contender, all guaranteed to win at least $1.26 million, fares.
