Aaron Gustavson Wins PokerStars European Poker Tour London Main Event
October 9, 2009
Some of the brightest poker minds came together at the London Hilton Metropole for the final day of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour London. American Aaron Gustavson was relatively unknown but with a 2-to-1 chip lead over the next biggest stack, he was easily the favourite to win the Main Event. True enough, he withstood a strong stand by none-other than Peter Eastgate to take the title and £850,000.
Moroccan Karim Bennani was the first to hit the rail winning £50,100 after he was left with just a few big blinds, courtesy of the crafty Rui Milhomens. Play went back and forth for some time and suddenly two eliminations came one after the other. PokerStars Team Asia Pro Raymond Wu busted in seventh place for £87,000 and Rui Milhomens exited in sixth place for £124,000.
Eastgate took over chip lead but Gustavson busted out Dominic Cullen when his pocket eights made a set to wrest the lead again. Cullen got a very healthy £173,000 for his fifth place finish. Martin Gudvangen whose stack was crippled by Gustavson was then busted by German Nikolai Senninger. Gudvangen won a whopping £227,000. Unfortunately for Senniger, his victory was short-lived as he was the next to go in fourth place. He ended up with £285,000.
Gustavon was holding a 2-to-1 chip lead versus Eastgate going into heads-up play. Eastgate was suddenly reduced to half his stack after betting every street on a certain hand only to fold on a last raise by Gustavson. On the last hand, Eastgate ended up pushing with A-9 after a re-raise only to find out he was dominated by Gustavson’s A-Q. Eastgate’s hand didn’t improve and the crowd favorite had to settle for £530,000. Gustavson, on the other hand, raked in his biggest win to date with his staggering £850,000 win.
