Greg Mueller Wins 2009 WSOP $10,000 World Championship LHE
June 19, 2009
After a grueling three days, Greg “FBT” Mueller finally wasted the competition to win the 2009 World Series of Poker Event #33, the $10,000 World Championship Limit Hold’em. Kudos to Greg who survived a tough final table and outlast seasoned poker professionals, including Chad Brown and Jennifer Harman (who busted with $41,040 in 12th place).
Daniel Alaei entered the final table as chip leader with 1,001,000 in chips. Eventual winner Greg Mueller was in the middle of the pack with 598,000. Soheil Shamseddin had the lowest chip stack with 386,000. It was, however, Kenny Hsiung who fell in ninth place when he got his chips in with Kd-Qh versus Alaei’s As-8c. The board didn’t help Hsiung and he ended up with $55,996. Shamseddin was the next to go in eighth place for $59,996 when he lost to Matt Glantz.
After hurting his stack courtesy of Alaei, Michiel Brummelhuis shoved and found himself against Glantz and Pat Pezzin. Pezzin took the pot down and Brummelhuis ended up in seventh place for $67,647. By now, Glantz was short-stacked and he moved by raising from the cutoff with As-3d. He was called by Big Blind Pezzin with Qc-Jc. Glantz pushed all-in after the Ac-5c-Qd flop. Pezzin called and completed his flush after a Kc hit the turn. Glantz went home with $80,342.
Another Matt was sent home when Matt Hawrilenko was busted by Pezzin in fifth place for $100,688. Hawrilenko was All-In with Qc-8d and was called with Qs-9s. The board ran 6c-3h-2d-Kc-3s and it was all over for Hawrilenko. Alaei’s time of glory was over as it was he who exited in fourth place for $134,733 courtesy of Mueller. Greg Mueller bet out on a Qh-10d-6d flop and Alaei raised. Mueller re-raised and Alaei called All-In with As-8c. Mueller was ahead with 10c-8d and even improved to trips by the river. Alaei fell short of his second bracelet for the 2009 WSOP.
Chad Brown was the next to go in third place for $188,855. He was all-in with Qs-10c versus Mueller’s Ah-9h. The board ran 5s-8d-7d-Kd-6h. Mueller hit a straight and it was all over for Brown.
Heads up, Pezzin put up a good fight but in the end, he can only muster enough strength for second place. On the last hand, Mueller raised pre-flop and was called. Pezzin bet out the 2h-Kh-3c flop and was raised by Mueller. Pezzin called All-In with 10d-8s and Mueller was ahead with Pocket 5s. The turn Qd and river Ks was no help to Pezzin and he had to settle for $285,196. Mueller ended up with $460,836 and his very first WSOP bracelet.
